If you do not have a Shareview account, please write to Equiniti and enclose a copy of your marriage certificate or other relevant legal document.
If the shares were held solely in the name of the deceased, you should send Equiniti an official copy of the document by which the deceased’s legal personal representative was appointed, usually the grant of probate or letters of administration, impressed with the court seal. The name of the legal personal representative will be put on the register. The shares can then be sold by the personal representative, or transferred to the deceased’s beneficiary. If the value of the deceased’s estate is below certain limits, the death can be registered using the small estates procedure which is less complex. Details of the current limits and the procedure involved can be obtained from Equiniti. If the shares were held jointly by the deceased and another person, the original death certificate is required. The shares will then be registered in the name of the surviving holder, and the relevant share certificates will be amended to reflect this.
Share certificates
Share certificates are evidence of your ownership and should be kept in a safe place. You will need them if you want to sell all or some of your shares in the future. We recommend that you keep a separate record of the certificate numbers and the number of shares each certificate covers in case of loss or damage. Share certificates are posted to shareholders at their own risk.

Unsolicited Calls about my shares or investments.
In recent years, many companies have become aware that their shareholders have received unsolicited telephone calls or correspondence concerning investment matters. These are typically from overseas based callers who target UK shareholders, offering to sell them, what often turns out to be worthless or high-risk shares in US or UK investments.
These operations are often referred to as ‘Boiler rooms’. These callers can be very unpleasant and extremely persuasive, and shareholders are strongly advised to be wary of any unsolicited advice, offers to buy shares at a discount or offers of free company reports.
If you receive any unsolicited investment advice:
- Obtain the correct name of the person and firm
- Review the Financial Services Register by visiting www.fca.org.uk/register to check if the person and firm contacting you are authorised by the FCA or call the FCA’s Consumer Helpline on 0800 111 6788
- Search the list of unauthorised firms to avoid at www.fca.org.uk/scams
- Report the matter to the FCA using the share fraud reporting form at https://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/report-scam-us#Report or by call the Consumer Helpline on 0800 111 6788
